Špilberk International Music Festival is now a traditional, well-established part of summer cultural life in Brno and the broader South Moravia region. Visitors are attracted by the combination of Špilberk Castle’s captivating historical setting and symphonic music. The wide-ranging programme, ranging from lofty classics to crossover, draws a broad spectrum of listeners.
Špilberk International Music Festival was founded by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000. The project was initiated by Director Bohus Zoubek and chief conductor Aldo Ceccato as the only project of its kind in the Czech Republic built solely around a symphonic program. Although the first season’s festival was an experiment, the format proved surprisingly successful. Since then it has become a hugely popular celebration of music, both for Brno and the entire surrounding region.
Over the ten years since its inception, the Spilberk Music Festival has become a respected and highly popular music event, an integral part of Brno’s summer cultural scene. The festival brings audiences, as well as prominent performers from all over the Czech Republic and abroad, to the city of Brno. High-quality ensembles and well-selected repertoires combine to produce an unforgettable experience in the outdoor festival atmosphere of Brno’s legend-enshrouded Spilberk Castle.
