Špilberk International Music Festival

18th year

13 – 25 I 8 I 2017

Great courtyard of the castle Špilberk

As is now the tradition, the second half of August 2017 will belong to the Špilberk music festival. Organised by the Brno Philharmonic, it offers Brno’s inhabitants and visitors a summer open-air cultural experience in the beautiful castle grounds. As in previous years, the programme includes something for everyone to enjoy. Bel canto lovers can look forward to a selection of arias by celebrated masters of Italian opera, performed by Simona Šaturová, currently one of our most acclaimed sopranos. A light symphonic programme will present Saint-Saëns’s First Cello Concerto with the German soloist, Troels Svane, as well as works by Mozart, Kodály and Brahms. Another concert, conducted by Caspar Richter, co-founder of the Špilberk festival, will be full of famous film melodies, including those by the Brno-born Erich Wolfgang Korngold. (This year we mark the 120th anniversary of Korngold’s birth and the 60th of his death.) In addition to the Brno Philharmonic, the festival will feature the popular Gustav Brom Radio Big Band with their programme of swing, and the Brno Youth Symphony Orchestra, who will perform Shostakovich’s powerful Thirteenth Symphony “Babi Yar”, based on poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko. The legendary poet, who died in April 2017, was a vocal critic of the Soviet regime and its occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. The cinema concerts, now well established, will convey the atmosphere of star-studded concerts in Vienna and Paris.
