Spilberk Festival

17th Špilberk International Music Festival

16 to 27IAugI2016

Great Courtyard, Špilberk Castle, Brno

This 17th year of the Špilberk open-air summer festival will fill the courtyard of the castle with beautiful human voices: virtually all of the programmes over seven nights in August are vocal. In the first two concerts we will hear the most commonly performed oratorio repertoire of the last three centuries: from the last, Orff’s Carmina Burana; from the nineteenth, Dvořák’s Te Deum; from the eighteenth, Handel’s Messiah. After listening to select soloists in these works, those who would like to hear more have Dagmar Pecková’s evening, in which she embodies seven beautiful sinful women who have inscribed themselves indelibly into the world’s mythology, and a new crossover project involving Dan Bárta and the Robert Balzar Trio, commissioned by the Brno Philharmonic. Although the programme of Ondřej Havelka and his Melody Makers does not indicate a vocal soloist, we know that he always takes the microphone and brings back the lyrics and melodies of erstwhile hits that some of us remember from our pre-war childhood. The first of the two cinema concerts, prepared in cooperation with Vienna’s IMZ (Internationales Musikzentrum), likewise features star vocalists Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras.
