The festival came into being as an experiment when, in 2000, the Brno Philharmonic decided to try the main courtyard of the Špilberk castle as a venue for orchestral concerts. This proved to be an excellent idea, and the five concerts which the orchestra prepared here in each of the following eight years were an enormous success. A beautiful tradition of evenings of music held at a historical venue under an August sky was thus established.
