Kirana is a contemporary children’s opera, conceived and designed to connect artists with children in a collaborative creative process. Professional artists from Malta travel to the place where the opera is to be performed and conduct a five-day workshop with local children (musicians and dancers). The creative output of the workshops is integrated into the performance so that the children contribute directly to the opera with their own rhythms, movements and language. The performance includes a local actor as the narrator, so Kirana can be shown in any language. The story is inspired by the creation myths of different cultures, mainly the legends from China, India, Babylon and Mesopotamia.
The opera was premiered in April 2013 in Żejtun, Malta. Since then this unique project has been realised in a number of opera houses and festivals in Cyprus, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Latvia, Australia and elsewhere.
