Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring was premiered in 1913. The event was a watershed in the history of music and – since this was a time of intense artistic ferment – also the tip of an iceberg. Dating from the same year is the futurist opera Victory over the Sun, composed by Mikhail Matiushin (1860–1934) with a libretto by the poet, Alexei Kruchenykh (1886–1968) and sets and costumes by the painter, Kazimir Malevich (1878–1935). The prologue for the opera was written by Velimir Khlebnikov (1885–1922), the inventor of Zaum, a style of poetry that focused on the word as such, the “self-sufficient word” (samovitoe slovo), a word of its own value. Zaum emphasised new sound and expressive qualities over the communicativeness of realism.
The title of Matiushin’s opera symbolises victory.
