The composer and music theorist Arseny Avraamov (1886–1944) was one of the greatest musical inventors and innovators of his time. He worked with noises, integrating them into musical structures, and came up with many technical discoveries and innovations. He invented new instruments and developed a way of making “graphical sound“, by drawing directly onto the optical soundtrack of a film. His best-known achievement is the Symphony of Sirens (Simfoniya gudkov), which he performed repeatedly, and to greatest acclaim in 1922 in an open space in the harbour city of Baku, Azerbaijan. The performance was an impressive spectacle with lots of sound (or noise). As can be seen in one of the few photographs of the composer in action, the happening was conducted by Avraamov himself, standing on a tower and equipped with coloured flags and a field telephone. The next year Avraamov presented his work in Moscow, but the effect was not nearly so astonishing, as the show was put on using a more modest budget and in a city of different proportions, where the factory sirens were more remote.
